  • Glucosamine + chondroitin combination is a nutritional supplement used to treat osteoarthritis in dogs, cats, miniature pigs, and other animals, as well as feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) in cats. Glucosamine acts as a mild anti-inflammatory and is used by the joints to make cartilage components and by the urinary tract for protection. Chondroitin inhibits destruction and promotes production of cartilage components.

  • Griseofulvin (brand names: Fulvicin®, Gris-Peg®, Grisovin®) is an antifungal used to treat ringworm and other skin, hair, and nail fungal infections in cats, dogs, small mammals, and horses. Griseofulvin is given by mouth in the form of a tablet or liquid suspension.

  • Honey, topical (HoneyCure®, Medihoney®, Silver Honey®, L-Mesitran®, HoneyHeel®), is a medical-grade honey used in all animal species as an alternative or adjunctive therapy for skin conditions, including wounds due to injury and burn wounds.

  • Hyaluronate sodium topical (brand names Hycoat®, Transcend®, others) is a topical liquid solution used in the management of wounds, ulcers, burns, and autograph procedures in cats, dogs, and horses. It provides moisture and a protective barrier to aid in wound healing.

  • Hydrocortisone otic is a steroid medication used to treat topical inflammation of the ears in pets. It is often combined with antibiotics and comes as a liquid solution applied within the ear canal.

  • Hydroxyzine (brand names: Atarax®, Vistaril®, Masmoran®, Multipax®) is an antihistamine used off label in cats, dogs, horses, and birds to treat allergic and itchy conditions. It can also be used as a sedative/tranquilizer. Hydroxyzine is given by mouth in the form of a tablet, liquid solution, or capsule. It may also be given as an injection in the hospital.

  • Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) topical is used for the management of skin conditions such as wounds, abscesses, cuts, abrasions, skin irritations, ulcers, post-surgical incision sites, and burns. It may be used to prevent or treat bacterial skin infections, including methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Hypochlorous acid also has antifungal and antiviral properties and is reported to reduce inflammation, pain, and itching.

  • Idoxuridine (brand names Dendrid®, Herplex®, Stoxil®) is an antiviral topical medication used to treat viral infections of the eye, such as feline herpesvirus-1 (FHV-1) in cats. It may also be useful for treating canine herpesvirus-1 in dogs and equine herpesvirus-2 in horses. Pregnant women should NOT handle this medication.

  • Imidocarb dipropionate (brand name Imizol®) is a drug used to treat infections caused by protozoa (single-celled organisms that sometimes cause disease), such as babesiosis infection in dogs. It is also used off-label to treat other protozoal infections in dogs, cats, and horses. Imidocarb dipropionate is given by injection by a veterinarian.

  • Imipramine (brand names: Tofranil®, Impril®) is a tricyclic antidepressant used in cats, dogs, and horses to treat urinary incontinence, sudden muscle weakness, and certain behavior disorders. It may also be used in conjunction with other medications to treat chronic pain. Imipramine is given by mouth or injection and is used off label.
