How to give eye drops to your cat

Instructions

00:00:00:00 – 00:00:26:06
Your cat needs eyedrops. It’s easier than you think. Let’s break down the process. Start by washing your hands to prevent contamination and avoid spreading the infection. Gently clean any debris from your cat’s eyes with warm water and a washcloth. As for the medication, if directed to do so, gently shake it. Only remove the cap when it’s time to give the drops.

There are different ways to position your cat when giving them eyedrops. One way is to hold your cat in your lap, facing away from you. Another way is to sit beside them. Something that might work if your cat doesn’t like being held. If needed, you can try wrapping them in a towel, leaving only their head exposed. You may even decide to have someone else hold your cat for you.

Now that you’ve got your cat in a comfortable position, hold the bottle between your thumb and index finger with your other hand. Gently lift your cat’s head up. You can gently rest the hand holding the bottle on your cat’s head for stability and then use your available fingers and thumb to spread the top and bottom eyelids. Hold the bottle close to your cat’s eye, but do not touch the eye surface with the applicator.

Squeeze the prescribed number of drops directly onto the eyeball, aiming for the center of the eye. Blinking will naturally spread the medication over their eye. If your cat is struggling, you can release them. Otherwise, reward them with massage and treats. Here’s a few extra pieces of advice. It’s important to keep the medication applicator tip clean, so don’t let it come in contact with your cat, their eye, or any other surface.

If you think you miss getting a drop in your cat’s eye or aren’t quite sure, just give another one. The odd extra drop won’t make a difference. And lastly, take it as slow as you need to give yourself and your cat time to work through the process. Here are the key things to remember when giving eye drops. Find a position that’s comfortable.

00:02:10:15 – 00:02:33:12
Keep the applicator tip clean and praise your cat when it’s over. Giving eyedrops may not go as planned the first time, or even the 10th time, but as a pet owner, you do the best you can because your cat is worth it.
